Methodical Approach to Biodiversity at G. D. Vajra
G.D. Vajra is one of Piemonte’s leading wine producers, recognised for its deep
commitment to organic cultivation and sustainability. One area where Vajra particularly
excels is biodiversity, which they promote through a scientific and methodical approach.
Flora and Fauna
"For us, rich biodiversity enables the
production of grapes with greater
character and helps create more
resilient vineyard ecosystems capable
of withstanding climate change and
invasive species," says Aldo Vaira,
winemaker and founder of G.D. Vajra.
Vajra collaborates closely with scientists
and experts to monitor and improve
biodiversity in their vineyards through
soil, air, water, flora, and fauna analyses.
A key initiative is their ‘Flora and Fauna’
research project, launched in 2016.
"We have focused on creating diversity
in the living environments surrounding
our vineyards. We have planted hedges
and fruit trees, preserved more than 17
hectares of forest, and created wetlands
to maintain a thriving ecosystem.
While the media often highlights bees,
researchers have found that butterflies,
bumblebees, and certain fly species are
excellent indicators of environmental
health. Bumblebees, in particular, reflect
ecosystem well-being, and fortunately,
we see many of them here."

Organic Practices and
Equalitas Certification
With this structured approach, G.D. Vajra
sets high standards for sustainability and
biodiversity in the wine industry.
"We began cultivating our vineyards
organically as early as 1971. Today, all
our vineyards are organically certified,
except for those we have recently
acquired or established, as it takes
three years to complete the organic
certification process.
Organic farming and responsible
production are integral to our identity,
which is why we are also proud to have
achieved the Equalitas sustainability
certification.”
Equalitas is a certification standard in the
wine industry that requires producers
to demonstrate their commitment to
social, environmental, and economic
sustainability to obtain certification.
